As you’ve walked along our sugar sand beaches you might have spied holes scattered here and there. Those are the homes of ghost crabs. These crabs are a pale color similar to the color of sand. They are rarely seen during the day and are mainly active during the night. Ghost crabs aren’t very large crabs. Their bodies are 2-3 inches in length. They have eyes supported on stalks giving them a wide field of vision to see in any direction. Ghost crabs have strong legs allowing them to run fast and reach speeds up to 10 mph. This makes them the cheetahs of crustaceans!
